No, usually I don’t rinse it afterwards. Occasionally if I feel like I accidentally used too much mordant I will try rinsing the extra off. But in the eco-printing process, some of the iron with bind with the plant dyes to the fabric and any excess will be rinsed off at the end.
Hi Louise, sorry to bother you again. I mordanted white cotton fabric and t-shirt with iron and both turned out yellow. Is it supposed to be like this or did I use to much iron or did I leave it for too long? Thank you so much
Hi, if it is very pale yellow, that’s ok. If it seems too dark, you can try rinsing some off in plain water. Try using a bit less next time, but don’t worry about it too much.
Yes, just dissolve the powder in some water. You can be more precise with the measurements when using powdered mordants – for iron sulphate use at a ratio of 1-2% of the weight of the fibre.

Just to double-check, you don’t rise the fabric in clean water after mordanting it with iron? Thank you

Thank you Louise, will do 🙂 🙂
Hello Louise,
If I use iron sulphate in powder instead of rusty water, will the process be the same?
Thanks,
Lola

Thank you Louise!
Whoops I forgot to rinse in fresh water first, will I redo the T-shirts after they dry from their mordant dip?
No problem Marilyn. While it is best practise to rinse in water first, the mordanting will still work fine without that step.
